May Day Tuesday | St. Peters Photographer

May 2nd, 2012

This Tuesday finds me reflecting on all the reasons why I feel lucky to love pursuing my own business.

I love to be challenged; it forces me to grow in what I am passionate about.  I love to connect with my clients, the way I want to connect with them.  I love to give back to the community and devote extra time to organizations I believe in.  I love the feeling of pride that overwhelms me when I’ve created something on my own.  I love that I can find time for a work/life balance, and when my life needs me to take a break from work, my work allows me this opportunity.

Much of last week and the rest of this week, I will be devoting some time to my parents.  I am certainly thankful that when they need me, I can be there for them.  With that said, I don’t have much business to blog about this week.  However, I would like to take the opportunity to offer a FUN promotion.  By the way, this is yet another reason I love owning my own business….making a decision to do something FUN!

Tuesday Updates | St. Peters Photographer

April 24th, 2012

Wow!  A few weeks have come and gone since my last Tuesday blog.

Tuesday’s are just flying by and I am starting to realize how easy it is for busyness to get the best of me, at least in the way of keeping up my blog that is.  I have so many things coming to fruition right now with my photography business and schooling.  Yes…you read right, schooling.  I am graduating with a degree in Graphic Design this July.  Yay!!  Although I am thrilled about this accomplishment, it has certainly overwhelmed my spare time with finals and planning for an upcoming internship.  I am gaining a new appreciation for all the college kids out there trying to juggle all they do.  Finding the balance in time while caring for family, running a business and going to school can be challenging, but I remind myself often to appreciate the blessing of it all.  I was reminded just this past week in the lyrics of a familiar, favorite song, “In the middle of my little mess, I forget how big I’m blessed.”  A reminder to myself every now and again to breath and tell myself, “If I miss a blog or two occasionally, it’s not the end of the world.  It just means I am busy doing what I love, taking pictures and learning how to always be the best I can be at just that!”

Most of my photography sessions over the past two weeks have been with graduating seniors.  Old Town St. Charles, historic Cottleville and cooperating weather made perfect settings for these shoots.  I am looking forward to getting the editing work done on these sessions.  I will also be finishing up a shoot with one of my Senior Role Models.  I am eager to get his session shot and edited so I can finalize this new program for 2012 and get it up, running and released.

I was honored to photograph the Third Annual Gala for BreakDown STL Saturday, April 14th at the Kemp Auto Museum. What an amazing event with Tim Ezell as MC and Andy Benes as a guest speaker, also the recipient of the BreakDown STL Youth Empowerment Award.  It was certainly a “red carpet” event!

A big, heartfelt thanks to BreakDown STL for announcing me that evening as BreakDown’s official photographer.  I love this group and all they are doing for our community.

Saturday, I photographed Lindsey and Adam’s wedding at Hermann Hill.  What a beautiful day it turned out to be after all the rain we had last week.  I also found time over the weekend for a workshop on senior photography at the Hilton Ball Park and the Wedding Trail in Hermann.  Always appreciative to learn!

Tip of the week:  Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Until Next Tuesday!

First Tuesday in April | St. Louis Photographer

April 3rd, 2012

Today’s Tuesday blog is accompanied with record heat for a St. Louis April.

April?  Already April and it feels like June.  Easter is just around the corner and I feel like I should be watching nature bloom and yet I find myself wanting to pull out my swim suit and head out back for a dip in the pool.  What is up with our crazy weather patterns lately and where does the time go?  Much of my work this week has me asking myself this very question.  Well, not really about the weather, but about the passing time.

Babies…Babies…Babies!  I absolutely love my newborn and baby sessions.  This week brought me so much fun in two   families and their sweet baby girls.  Sophia and Olivia were simply angels as we adorned them in tutus, bunny wear, and even police uniforms.  These two beautiful babies were each just about a week old and I am so pleased with all the creativity used in their shoots.  I just love it when the parents are willing to be creative with me.  It sure makes for some pretty amazing photos.  It’s working with these little newborn’s that often has me wondering where the time goes.  I offer a Bebe Collection to my clients wanting newborn sessions. It’s a program that offers parents a discounted price and other specials with four custom portrait sessions as their baby grows: newborn, 3 months, 6-9 months and 12 months.  Parents can rest assured that they have a pre-paid session ready and waiting when the time comes.  I worked with little Roman last Thursday for his one year old session, his parents Gina & Leo are dear friends of mine.  It seems like just yesterday we were doing his newborn session.  I can’t believe he is already one year old and such a go-getter.  Gina and I had such a blast playing with him to get the shots we wanted.  It was precious time spent for sure.

Sunday evening had me reminiscing over time again as I headed to Quail Ridge Park to meet Krista & Adam for a maternity session.  Although it was a hot afternoon, it didn’t keep us from capturing great images of this special time in their life.  I couldn’t believe I was meeting Krista for a maternity session.  She used to be one of my dance students and now she is about to be a mommy.  Krista and Adam are a sweet couple and I loved spending time with them.  I also love that they are keeping the sex of the baby a secret until the arrival.  I can’t wait to meet their new one for a newborn session – only a few weeks away!

The weekend also brought an engagement session downtown.  Lindsey and Adam had a perfect day for a shoot at the City Garden, Busch Stadium, and The Arch Grounds. It was fun to get to know this couple a little better before their big day at Hermann Hill on April 21st.

I’m looking forward to my family being home for Easter.  Preparations are now underway for a houseful.  Can’t wait!

Tip of the week:  Happy Easter!!  Have any little ones to surprise?  Here is a link for some fun printouts and Easter treats.  Enjoy!!  http://www.welovetoillustrate.com/2012/04/free-easter-printables.html

Tuesday Blog | St. Peters Photographer

March 28th, 2012

My Tuesday Blog was ready to go on Tuesday, but my internet went out again before I could get it posted. Someone came out and ran a new cable for me yesterday and my internet is now working better than it has in months – yeah! So . . . Here’s Tuesday’s blog ~ on Wednesday.

Last week brought me tons to be excited about!  Sure makes for easy Tuesday blogging!

The forecast of rain most days left me feeling uncertain of the ability to capture what I was hoping to with my clients.  Turns out, even though the forecast was dreary, the off and on cooperating weather had me excited and seizing opportunities as they came.

Early on in the week, the weather held off just long enough for me to get some of the shots I needed with 18 month old Claire.  The damp day wasn’t favorable for her Easter frills, but it really turned into such a fun session.  Although Claire didn’t want to sit long, she became very attached to one of my little chairs.  So much so, that she wanted to drag it into every shot.  She was very precious dressed in her purple and white Easter dress.  When the rain broke for a short time, we ventured outdoors and captured some perfect moments near my purple tulips surrounded by trees in full bloom.  The purple was perfect!

I was happy to meet another busy little guy later in the week on Friday during his mother’s maternity shoot. Two year old Avery was not really interested in the photo shoot with mom and dad, but was willing to let me snap a few quick shots of him.  Just adorable!!  Little ones always bring such innocence, honesty and laughter to the lens.  I am always thrilled with the images I get from their shoots and even more so when the weather doesn’t get in the way of my plans.

On Saturday, the weather threatened an engagement session with Abby and Ben scheduled in Forest Park.  The forecast wasn’t promising for the evening so we opted to move the session up a few hours although still concerned that the rain may put a damper on the session all together.  I don’t think any of us were real excited about getting caught in a storm in the middle of the park.  All three of us appreciated the weather cooperating and allowing this beautiful session to continue as planned.

What a blast I had on Sunday shooting my Senior ROLE MODEL’s.  The kids did a great job helping me create a fun concept and I absolutely loved every look that hair and makeup stylists Marla Lebish (hair) and D’Shannon Llewellyn (makeup) created.  It was certainly a day full of excitement with music, snacks, props, blue skies, sunshine and smiles.  I even got to try out some of my new equipment on these soon-to-be seniors.  It was a long, but fun day and I can’t wait to share the amazing shots and video coverage from this fun session. Click this link to play a sneak peek slideshow of a few shots of the day ~ Cathy Hartman Photography Senior Role Models 2012-13

Special thanks this week to SNL Painting for transforming the walls of my front showroom into a shimmering shade of gold.  Looks amazing!  Looking forward to seeing the room come to life as I get everything put back together.

Tip of the week:  This week’s tip, isn’t really a tip.  Rather, an offer for a cool new find.  If you have an iphone4, I can make personalized cases with a favorite photo from a past or upcoming session.  The cost is $35.  Contact me for more details. Until Next Tuesday! ~Cathy

Terrific Tuesday | St. Peters Photographer

March 20th, 2012

Yep!!  It’s certainly a “Terrific Tuesday” again.

Last week I titled my blog “Terrific Tuesday.”  Who knew I would be so lucky to be calling Tuesday “Terrific” two weeks in a row?   I actually feel it’s a must today, especially with it being the first official day of spring.  While I’m mentioning luck, I’m hopeful this lovely weather pattern is a trend that grants me some luck with my upcoming shoots this week.  The spring surroundings at my home studio would certainly make for some amazing backdrops.  Cooperation from Mother Nature can certainly play a role in a photographers favor, but sometimes, the unexpected surprise creates the perfect treasure.

Can’t say I initially felt she (Mother Nature) offered me much luck this past Saturday at the St. Patrick’s Day Run and Parade in Cottleville.  For the past 3 seasons, I’ve captured images during this fun event and this year, I was lucky to be named the Parade’s “Official Photographer.”   I photographed from start (7:30 am) to an unexpected, surprise wet finish.   I suddenly found myself huddling with parade judges, emcees, and anyone else who joined the squeeze under the porch at The Flower Shop.  How quickly my lucky opportunity changed as I found myself soaked from head to toe, appreciating the fact that my equipment was safe and dry while waiting for the rain to slow enough to make a break for the car.  I must say, even though the midday thunderstorm from the rain put a quick damper on the festivities, it turns out, the down pour made for some of the best unexpected shots of folks heading for cover and dancing in the rain.  Once again…lucky!  I am really excited about some of these photos and think some of them may make some fun family memories.  Anyone interested in ordering photos can follow the link to my site.  Enter  client login and type green12 in the album box.

Another unexpected lucky surprise came my way this morning in the way of some very exciting news!!  About 3 weeks ago, I did some special editing for a client ordering a photo on a large canvas.  Some of you may recall the photo, male dancer leaping under the St. Louis Arch?   I received a phone call this morning from Diversified Lab in St. Louis.   They featured my edited photo as the “Photo of the Day” on their Facebook page.   Can’t wait to get my hands on the canvas to see the finished product!  Yay!!

As always, much of last week’s agenda was made of the usual; editing work, a few great meetings with brides and finishing up a couple of albums.  I was very happy to finalize some decorating decisions on my front room currently being renovated into my showroom thanks to the assistance of SNL painting.  I’ve partnered with this organization on a few occasions for business and family photography and certainly appreciate all the business they’ve done for me as well.

I am really excited about the shoots I have on the schedule for the week, including the group shoot with my new Senior Role Model’s.  Watch for pictures and video coverage coming soon.  Once again, I am happy to introduce my Senior Role Models for the 2012-3013 season:

Kristen Warncke – Francis Howell Central

Alden Henderson – St. Louis University High School

Henry | St. Peters Newborn Photographer

March 14th, 2012

I don’t think I’ve ever photographed a newborn who slept so soundly throughout his entire shoot.  Thank you Kelsey & Nick for sharing this sweet little guy, and I love the props you brought along!

Terrific Tuesday | Cathy Hartman Photography

March 13th, 2012

Wow what a beautiful day! I had to take a little time from my editing to walk around and snap a few shots of the spring flowers in my yard. With the warm weather finally here, I’m amazed at the promise each year brings. Watching the buds appear and then blossom on the trees almost overnight is one of my favorite parts of spring. Then the new grass and flowers emerge, fresh and colorful. It’s a wonderful time of year. We look forward to the welcome change of weather, like the familiar hug of a long-lost friend. This year, I feel it more than ever. I can not wait to spend some time outside, planting flowers, reading and just enjoying this wonderful season. I’m also very excited to get outside for some gorgeous outdoor sessions. Year after year, I’m amazed at how lucky I am to be doing what I love, every day. Thank you so much for being a part of my journey. Your business and your friendship mean the world to me.

Wishing you plenty of wonderful springtime memories, and looking forward to helping you create new ones for you to enjoy for many years to come.

“May the sun shine all day long,

everything go right, and nothing wrong.

May those you love bring love back to you,

and may all the wishes you wish come true!

~Irish Blessing

Looking forward to spending St. Patrick’s Day in Cottleville this Saturday. For the third year in a row, I’ll be photographing their Run for the Helmet, Parade, and festivities of the day. Here’s a link to the slideshow I did last year to get you in the mood for a fun St. Patrick’s Day ~ hope to see you in Cottleville!

Melissa & Mike Married | Hermann Wedding Photographer

March 12th, 2012

Mike & Melissa’s wedding turned out  beautifully. I cannot believe how quickly they were able to make plans and pull it all together. Their busy lives kept getting in the way of setting a date for their wedding.  So, on a Friday in February they purchased their marriage license and on Saturday morning they booked Hermann Hill Chapel. Melissa called me immediately after to see if I would be able to photograph their wedding the next day.  I’m so happy I was available to be a part of this intimate family wedding.  On Saturday they had purchased a wedding dress, dresses for the girls and rented tuxes for the guys. Hermann Hill took care of the cake and flowers for them and they had a beautiful and moving ceremony on Sunday afternoon.  No guests, just this new family of 5 consisting of a bride, groom and their 3 children.  It was one of the sweetest weddings I’ve ever been blessed to shoot.  Their 12 year old daughter even gave a beautiful speech when they cut their cake, which I caught on video. Be sure to click the link at the bottom of this blog to see a slideshow of more images from their special day including this sweet speech. I was thrilled to have met this family – It was a happy day!
